Hi, I'm Angie Hall and I'm the pre-need coordinator for Davie Funeral Service. Pre-need is becoming more common in today's society. With the cost of a funeral greatly increasing each year, pre-need can alleviate the financial burdens families may incur when a loved one passes. Pre-need also can relieve emotional burdens by making sound decisions in advance. This frees your loved ones from that resposibility during a very emotional time. Pre-need is also expressing your preferences, being able to select sevices and merchandise in advance so your loved ones know your wishes.
Financial Pre-need
There is only one person who knows your finances, and that is you. With our help we can find a pre-need that fits into your budget.
Most Asked Questions:
-How do I pay?
*Using existing life insurance.
*Creating a bank trust.
*Purchasing burial insurance.
*Or a combination from above.
-Does this mean my funeral will be paid for?
*some life insurance policies have a face value with no growth
*Pre-need insurance and bank trusts have a face value, but have
continuous growth.
*Therefore your life insurance policies that have no growth will need to
to be attatched to a new policy that has growth which your
counselor can explain.
*Some policies require that you pay every month,
quarter, and year until the time of death (these are whole life
policies).
*pre-need insurance usually has the following terms:
-single pay which the funeral is paid in full, so it will have enough
growth to keep up with tomorrow's costs.
-payment options on pre-need insurance are three, five, seven,
and ten years with growth that keeps up with costs. However,
most require a mininum of two years before death occurs to pay
face value.
-when using existing insurance whether it has or not have a growth
option, it is usually attatched to a bank trust or pre-need insurance.
-under these circumstances your funeral bill is paid.
-using a bank trust, the funeral amount will only be paid when the
face value of the trust account has reached the face value of the
contract amount.
-How am I assured that this is a secure arrangement?
*under North Carolina law, all pre-needs must be registed with the
North Carolina Board of Funeral Service. There is a $20.00 filing
fee.
*after receiving the contract, you will receive a confirmation letter from
the Board of Funeral Service that they have received the contract and
that it is on file.
-What is the purpose of the filing fee?
*the state of North Carolina guarentees that this conrtract will be
honored regardless of the status of the funeral home, whether or
not they are still in business.
-Is there any part of a funeral contract that is not guaranteed?
*Yes, there are items that a funeral home obtains for a family at the
time of need, such as death certificates, opening and closing of the
grave, North Carolina sales tax, special music, hair dresser, obituaries,
flowers, or lunch and dinner the family may request. These items
are listed in your contract as non-guaranteed cash advance items.
-Can you offset these non-guaranteed expenses?
*Yes, by using a bank trust or an insurance policy for this specific
need, attatching this policy to your existing policy.
-How old must you be to obtain a pre-need?
*1 day to 85 years. Up until age 85 we can write a policy as described
above, but after age 85 only a single pay policy can be issued. One
must be age 18 to sign a contract in the state of North Carolina.
Emotional Pre-need
The time of death is very emotional for your loved ones. This is a time when family members need to support one another and not worry about how to pay, make arrangements, or figure out what was wanted. By pre-arranging you are relieving the emotional burden from your family. At this time you are also leaving a detailed list of your wishes at a time when sound decisions can be made. You are using your head, not your emotions. Most nursing care facillities require a pre-need before entry. Most agencies require an irrevocable pre-need.
-What is the difference between revocable and irrevocable pre-need?
*revocable means you are incharge and may manipulate the funds.
*irrevocable means you are not incharge, and this is not anasset
that would count against you for assistance.
-Will Social Security pay on my funeral?
*Social Security pays only when there is a surviving spouse or when
there is a dependent child.
-Will the Veterans Administration assist in the payment for my funeral?
*yes, as long as you have an honorable discharge and have served
in any branch of the United States Armed Forces you are entitled
to the following:
-a flag that is used on your casket which is presented to the
next of kin.
-a grave space in a veterans cemetery.
-opening and closing of the grave in the veterans cemetery.
-a mininum cemetery receptical which will be a grave liner
or burial vault.
-interment rites for you and your spouse in a veterans
cemetery and a dependent child.
-a marker for the grave.
-military honors.
-some veterans are entitled if they are service connected to
veterans benefits which range between $450 to $3500.
You must speak with the Veterans Affair Officer in the county
you live in and our firm will assist with the paperwork.
- to receive the above benefits you must present your military
DD-214 discharge papers.
Preference Pre-Need
Not all pre-needs are funded, this is known as a pre-arrangement. This is a listing of your goods and services without any attachment of a financial policy. By making a pre-arrangement your wishes are available to your loved ones at the time of death. By making a pre-arrangement you avoid conflict among family members at an emotional time. There is no charge for this service.
Please contact me with any questions regarding pre-need.
